lafemmesofcolor:

Hello everyone,

As the LA Femmes of Color Collective mentioned before the Femmes of Color panel we are apart of entitled “I See You: Creating #FemmesOfColorVisibility and Community” was accepted to participate at the Femme4Femme track this June at the Allied Media Conference in Detroit. We are thrilled to be apart of this track and to be able to share space with so many black femmes and femmes of color!

We are calling on our communities for support to get 5 femmes (Danielle Stevens, Dulce A. Garcia, Jo De La Torre, Laura Luna and V Durand) of the 8 panelists to AMC. The other 3 femmes (Andrea Quijada, Alyssa Hernandez and Kandace Creel Falcón) are able to provide funds to attend and be apart of the whole AMC experience.

The 5 femmes needing financial support need help covering costs of registration, flights and housing. Our grand total is $3,510. In our fundraiser link, we provide a breakdown of how the funds will be divided among those 3 previously mentioned groups of lodging, registration and flights.

If we are able to surpass our goal, we will be using the additional money for food during the conference and travelling between airport and the Wayne State University campus.

We feel that all of our respective work and this collaboration as a panel are an investment to our communities. We want to express deep appreciation for every single donation we receive and/or helping us by sharing our link to your various social networks. No donation and signal boost is too small in support of making all of our dreams of attending AMC for this panel come true.

Thank you!

In community,
V Durand
Danielle Stevens
Jo De La Torre
Laura Luna
Dulce A. Garcia

Currently reflecting on spaces intentionally created for QTIPOC folx and forms of violence brought into these spaces by white allies who: take up airspace + do not listen; insist on ignoring historical (and current) oppressive practices of local LGBTQ* organizations to prioritize appeasement + amicability in bids for resources; who base trans*ness on perception and consistently refer to themselves as the only trans* person in the room; assume roles of authority on dynamics of privilege-oppression as they relate to the complex, beautiful, overwhelming, painful, abundant, nuanced truths of living/loving/experiencing/healing/being a queer/trans* person of color. Currently thinking about consistent anxiety I feel around an individual who exudes these traits in these contexts. How they excuse themselves from accountability founded on an idea that talking about these concerns is privileged and not conducive to movement building. I should never have to question whether I am brown, queer, down, present, trans* enough in these spaces. [This selfie to remind myself that I exist, that I am surviving, that my identities and experiences are real and that I will fucking fight people who try to invalidate them.]

Chipotle ruined me.

I got sofritas, which never happens. Some chicken was in the mix and I even got a chunk of cartilage to chew on. This normally wouldn’t be a big deal except for the fact that I’ve been a vegetarian for the past 6 years and a vegan for the past few months. I feel so sick right now. It’s incredible.

“The funny thing is that most Americans put more miles on their cars every year just to go to work than it takes to go around the world. You piss away so much money every month living in a box, you go to the same job for 30 years, you retire when you’re too old to do anything, you sit in the house that you just now fully paid for, and then they take it away from you the minute you get sick and get your medical bills. The American Dream is not a dream; it’s slavery.”

“I didn’t do very well in school, and my son’s following in my footsteps. He’s got a great personality, and he’s bright, but school isn’t his thing. I don’t know what it is—it’s not lack of intelligence—but it just doesn’t work. He’s in eighth grade now, so it’s been an eight-year fight. I know from experience that he’s not going to fit in, so we’re doing homeschool rather than put him through the torture of high school. I wish somebody had taken me out of school. Now, we can basically cram all those school lessons into a shorter time during the mornings and evenings. The rest of the time he’s looking for jobs, working at a bike shop, and learning valuable life skills. I’d rather have him learn something that he can actually use.”
